解答例はAbout a month after I had met themなのですが、When it had been about a month since I met themは何かおかしいですか？

sea7さんの英文の言い方はしないですね。通常、when節のなかで現在・過去完了形は使わないです。

この場合、次のような言い方ができます。
例：
ーAbout a month after I (had) met them, I got really sick.
「彼らに会った約1ヶ月後、私はひどい病気になった」

ーI just met them in April, and I got really sick about a month later.
「私は4月に彼らに出会い、その約1ヶ月後にひどい病気にかかった」
