By saying excuse me, you are asking for the person's attention as politely as possible. Then, by asking if they are in line to check out, or if they are waiting in line, the person will understand that you didn't mean to interrupt, but were just wondering if they were standing in the line you were trying to get in. They will more often than not answer "oh, i'm sorry. No. Go ahead," or, "Yes, I am." That way, you will know you can either go ahead, or that you are in the correct spot in line. Don't worry, though. Then you carry on to ask: are you in the queue? 'Queue' is a noun which means ' a line or sequence of people or vehicles awaiting their turn to be attended to or to proceed.

You can ask : Are you in the queue? Are you in the line? ---> A queue is a line of people or vehicles that are waiting for something. ---> When people queue, they stand in a line waiting for something. ---> Queue up means the same as queue.

Any of these is acceptable to use for any situation in which there is some sort of line or queue of people waiting for something. You can add 'excuse me' or 'sorry to bother' in front of your questions to express politeness.

Using 'excuse me' is a good, polite way to get someone's attention. You are just checking with the other person to find out if they are part of a queue/line or not. Served - We use the word 'served' at the cash register to mean paying for your items, so asking are you waiting to be served is a polite way to ask if someone is in the line. Queue - this word has the same meaning as line but is more commonly used in the UK. We have to use 'the' when using queue, we cannot say 'are you waiting in queue.
