Although "why don't we talk about something else now" is sounds optional, almost every person you speak with would recognize this as a polite request that they must follow.
"Let's change the subject" means it's time to talk about something else.
最初の文は、相手に判断を委ねていると感じるかもしれませんが、だいたいの人はこれを「丁寧なお願い」だと受け止めて、聞き入れてくれます。
"Let's change the subject" は「他の話をしよう」という意味です。
他の先生方とかぶらないものを挙げますと、
Aside from ～ 「～は置いといて、別にして、～はさておき」 というのがあります。
例）
Aside from that, we have another problem.
「それとは別に、私たちはほかの問題もある。」
こんな感じです。

3. You make an appropriate comment about what you have been speaking about eg. ''great,' or 'brilliant,' and immediately move the subject to safer ground by talking about something mundane.

John had decided he wanted to change the subject.（ジョンは話題を変えたいと思った）
Please can we finally talk about something else, now?（もう他のことについてお話しませんか？）
Any of these sentences are appropriate:-
1. Let's not talk about that now
2. I'd rather not comment on that
"I'd rather not" is another way of saying " I would prefer not to".
3. Let's not raise that issue.
Any of these sentences will let the speaker know that you don't want to talk about that subject.
これらの文はどれも使うことができます。
1. Let's not talk about that now（その話は今はやめておきましょう）
2. I'd rather not comment on that（それについてはコメントしたくありません）
"I'd rather not" は "I would prefer not to"（～したくない）の別の言い方です。
3. Let's not raise that issue.（その話はやめておきましょう）
これらどの例を使っても、その話題については話したくないと伝えることができます。
