A: Look at this picture. It's from my trip last week.
この[写真](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/44671/)みて。先週の[旅行](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/44579/)の時のなんだ。
B: Woah. Where is this?
うわ〜。これどこ？
A: Japan.
日本だよ。
Where is this? It looks amazing!
これどこ？めっちゃすごそう！

という感じです。
Is this Tokyo?
これって東京？
の Tokyo の部分が where に入れ替わっていると
お考えください。これは色々と応用のきく表現です。
例えば、
You are from Tokyo? の代わりに
You are from where? と言えます。
これは会話の最中に、「[出身地](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/34400/)、どこだって？」
という感じで、正式な疑問文にしなくても使えるものです。
You went where? え？どこに行ったって？
You live where? え？どこに住んでいるって？
where だけでなく、
You bought a dress. の代わりに
You bought what? とも言えます。
これも会話の最中で、「え？何買ったって？」という
感じです。
★つまり、相手の言っていることがよく聞き取れないときに
使う表現です★

"Where was this taken" and "where did you take this photo" are very clear.
If you say "where was this" you should make sure it is clear you are talking about the photo so the listener can understand the context of your question.
「Where was this taken」や「where did you take this photo」はとてもわかりやすいです。
「where was this」と言うことで、写真について話していることをはっきりさせることができ、聞いている人に質問の文脈を理解させることができます。
You are browsing through your frriend's photo album together.
You friend was in the USA on a three month tourist trip and has a lot of photos to show you.
Then you see one photo - a desert scene and the sun is setting behind the distant mountains.
"Wow, I really like that photo! Where was it taken?"
"That was taken by my local guide in the Nevada desert."
アメリカに3か月旅行に行った来た友達とアルバムを一緒に見ていて、砂漠と太陽を背にした山々を映した一枚の写真が目に入った。
会話例
"Wow, I really like that photo! Where was it taken?"
わー、この写真良いね。どこで撮ったんですか？
"That was taken by my local guide in the Nevada desert."
これは、ネバダの砂漠で現地のガイドにとってもらったんだ。
Your friend has asked you to look at his pictures in his photo album. While paging through the album, you suddenly come across a photo with an amazing background. You would like to know where your friend was when he/she took that photo with an amazing background. Your curiosity then prompts you to ask the following question/s:
Where was this beautiful photo taken?
or
Where were you when you took this photo?
友達がフォトアルバムの写真を見せてくれました。
アルバムをめくっていくと、素晴らしい景色が広がっている写真に出くわします。
あなたは友達にその素晴らしい場所はいつどこで撮った写真なのか尋ねたくなります。
好奇心からあなたは友達に次のように尋ねます。

"Pic" is an abbreviated form of the word picture. You could have someone show you photos and you could cay "Nice! Where was this pic taken."
While pointing to or holding a picture you could ask the person "Where was this at?" "Using the word "at" in the sentence would show that you are trying to determine the location.
"Pic" はpicture（写真）の短縮系
です。
誰かがあなたに写真を見せたらこう言えます。
"Nice! Where was this pic taken."
素敵ですね！どこでこの写真を撮ったのですか？
写真を指差したり手に持ちながら"Where was this at?"（これはどこですか？）とも聞けます。 "at" を使うことでどの場所か知りたいことを表すことができます。
どこは英語でwhereです。

「その写真どこでとりましたか」という意味です。
Which place is that?
「その場所はどこ」という意味です。
