When you ask someone 'how do I address you' they will tell you how they prefer to be addressed.
Usually for men we say 'sir' and for women we say 'Mrs- if they are married, Miss- if they are not married and Ms-whether they are single or married'.
Some people prefer to be called 'madam' or in short 'ma'am' which is why you need to ask them how they prefer to be addressed.
how do I address you'と尋ねると、相手はどのように呼ばれたいかを教えてくれます。
"Sir" is the only formal way to address a guy.
"Ma'am or Ms" is a formal way of addressing a lady. Ms is aimed mainly towards younger females and Ma'am for mature women.
In English we often don't use such formalities even in a grocery or customer style setting but the words would be considered, "sir," or men and, "madam," for women.
