It's you favourite class but unfortunately your teacher is ill and will be absent. The school principal comes into the class and explains: "Mr James is too ill today and had to go home, so please just use this time as a free study period to do some homework or revision of previous lesson." A period = a length or portion of time, time, spell, interval. "He had long periods of depression"

At times there is a time in the day specifically dedicated for students to study or do work for classes and that is called a "study hall" or a "study period." In the case of a teacher not being able to come to the class due to illness or absence then the normal class can turn into a "study class."

Our school schedule is usually broken into set periods of time for our subjects. Whena teacher is absent or off sick the class members will each decide what they wish to work on.;-D This is known as a free study period. "The teacher was absent, so the class had a free study period today"

"Mr. Martin gave us this revision period he had to leave due to illness." "This is our study period Mr. Jesfthas is absent." The teacher has to leave the class due to falling ill and request students to use this preriod of time as a "revision period" for their upcoming exams. "Study period" is given to learners to keep them busy if they do not have a facilitator to cover the class of their sick teacher. The teacher is absent so we worked in groups and did a revision.

Self-study is the act of being responsible for one's own study routine and of choosing the content to review and revise.

We don't know why the teacher is off, maybe they are ill or have a family emergency or it is a planned absence and the student knows in advance that they will have a self-study period. So these examples work for all cases. Self-study is where the student learns without a teacher and the work may have been set in advance by the teacher or the student may be given a free choice.

Our teacher was unwell and unable to attend our class today, so instead we were given a free study period to catch up on some revision. This self-study helped me to understand the material we had already covered in class a lot better. It should help me to get a better grade on the final exam next week!
