「日本酒」はsakeとかJapanese sakeと言えば通じるくらいすでに海外でも有名です。
発音はあえてカタカナで書けば「サーキ」のように発音されることも多いですが、中には「サケ」と日本語のように言う人もいます。
お酒についてあまり詳しくない方などであれば、
Sake is a Japanese traditional alcoholic drink. It's made from fermented rice.
「酒は日本の伝統的なアルコール飲料です。発酵米からできています」
のように説明してあげると良いと思います。

Most foreigners are not familiar with Japanese 'Sake'.
To explain to a foreigner what Japanese sake is, say one of the following:
1) Japanese sake is a drink made from fermented rice.

Note:
Fermented= this means something (usually a liquid, such as juice) has started to decompose and turn into alcohol.
For example:

"In the winter, berries that remain on the trees become fermented from the cold."

Many foreigners consider sake to be the national drink of Japan.
It is a beverage brewed mainly from rice and water. It looks similar to white wine with a colour that can be a little bit yellow or transparent. It is usually stronger (a higher alcohol percentage) than wine and has a mild and pleasant taste.
Sake is a strong, traditional, alcoholic drink from Japan. It is a rice wine (made from rice) but is much higher in alcohol content than European Wine. Don't forget to inform the person you are inviting to drink of this! :)
「日本酒」の酒をローマ字にするとSakeになりますね。
他の英語圏の国はわからないんですが、アメリカで「サキ」という発音になります。
rice wineという表現でも説明できます。
rice wineを言うと相手は想像つかないかもしれないのでJapanese liquorという表現で説明できます。
