You may ask a bystander about a queue of people or perhaps a large group of individuals standing outside a building or blocking the road or street:
"What's going on? Who are all these people?"
Big deal - a thing considered important.
"Our company does not make a big deal out of minor irritations."
通りすがりの人に、その行列や、もしくはビルの外に立っているたくさんの人、または道を遮っている人について、以下のように聞いてもいいと思います。
"What's going on? Who are all these people?"
何があるんですか？この人たちは誰ですか？
Big deal - 何か重要なことという意味です。
"Our company does not make a big deal out of minor irritations."
私たちの会社は、ちょっとした煩わしことを大したこととは思っていません。
If you can see the line or crowd of people, you can point and ask "What's going on over there?". You can clearly see that there is an event or something interesting occurring.
If people are queuing/gathering but you cannot see what exactly is happening, then you can ask, "what is happening today?"
We all say "did I miss something?", as a kind of joke, like erm... what did I miss? How don't I know about this?
行列や人だかりが見えると、"What's going on over there?"「何があるんですか」と言うことができます。明らかに何らかのイベントやおもしろそうなことがあるのがわかりますよね。
もし人が集まっていたり、行列ができていて、何が起こっているのか見ることができないときは、"What is happening today?"「今日は何かあるのですか？」と聞くことができます。
"Did I miss something?"「何か見逃してしまった？」という表現はジョークのようによく使われます。
What did I miss? How don't I know about this?
何を逃してしまった？どうしてこのこと知らないんだろう。
*Why are people queuing/lining up for?
This means you are curious and you would like to know why people are waiting for.
For example:
You:Why are people queuing/lining up for?
Stranger: Nike is giving away free T-shirts.
*What is going on here?
This can be used if you see a huge crowd and you would like to know what is happening.
For example:
You:What is going on here?
Stranger: There is a dance group performing.

何のためにみんな列にならんでいるの？
これは、不思議に思って、どうして人が列にならんでいるのか知りたいという意味です。
例：
You:Why are people queuing/lining up for?
あなた：どうしてみんな列についているの？
Stranger: Nike is giving away free T-shirts.
見知らぬ人：ナイキが無料でＴシャツを配っているんだ。
*What is going on here?
なにがあるの？
これは、人だかりをみて、何があるのか知りたいときに使う表現です。
例：
You:What is going on here?
あなた：ここでなにがあるの？
Stranger: There is a dance group performing.
見知らぬ人：ダンスのグループがおどるみたいだよ。
When you're curious about a line into a building, you can ask the nearest staff member about what's happening in the following ways:
-What's happening here today?
-What's the line for? Is there an event?
-Is there something going on here today?
建物の中に続く行列が気になる時は、何が起こっているのか近くのスタッフに下記にように聞けます。
-What's happening here today?
今日、ここで何をやってるのですか？
-What's the line for? Is there an event?
この行列は何ですか？イベントですか？
-Is there something going on here today?
今日、ここで何かあるのですか？
I could not figure out "what was going on?"...the lobby was packed!
An unusual / unexplained event can " make us wonder or " arouse our curiousity"!
We could simply ask ..."what is the matter? "what is going on?"
" what's happening here?" or if we were so inclined: "can you enlighten me?
いつもないようなイベントは、「気になったり」、「好奇心がでたり」するものです。シンプルに、"what is the matter?"「どうしたの？」 "What is going on?"「何があるの？」または " What's happening here?" 「何があるの？」と聞いてみましょう。もしくは、ものすごく気になった場合には、"Can you enlighten me?"「何があるのか教えてもらえますか？」と聞いてみましょう。
If there is a crowd of people but you cant see whats happening then you could ask someone in the line `whats happening today please?' you dont have to add please you could just say whats happening today but people might be more likely to answer you if you say it in a friendly way.
Sometimes we also say did i miss something which is like a joking way of saying whats happening today as well
人だかりができているけど何が起きているのか分からない時は、そこにいる人に「What's happening today please?（今日は何があるんですか）」と聞けます。
「please」を付けずに「What's happening today?（今日は何があるんですか）」としてもいいですが、フレンドリーな聞き方をした方が答えてくれる可能性が高くなるかもしれません。
たまに「Did I miss something?」という言い方をすることもあります。これは「What's happening today?」の冗談っぽい言い方です。
