to qualifyまたは to modifyが「修飾する」という意味で使われます。
名詞では qualifierまたはmodifierが「修飾語句」という意味で使うことができます。
「'大きい'は'犬'という名詞を修飾する形容詞です」という文の場合は
'Big' is an adjective which modifies the noun, 'dog'.
という風になります。
例の "a big dog" において、形容詞 "big" が名詞 "dog" を修飾していると説明するには、"The adjective modifies the noun." と言います。
別の言い方として:
In "a big dog," "big" is the adjective that describes the noun "dog."
The adjective "big" is used to describe the qualities of the noun "dog."
