When we talk bout the four directions, up is the direction that describes things that are above us, like the sky or the clouds. When we lift things up, we are lifting them so that they are above something else.
4つの方向について話す際には、upは空や雲など上にあるものを表します。物を持ち上げる（lift things up）ときは、他の何かよりも上に（above something else）来るように持ち上げます。

The opposite of "down" is "up", this is most commonly used to say the opposite of down, however, you can also use the word "above" but this is less common.
There are a couple of different words that could be used but the most common would be up so the opposite of down would be up.
