定番って英語でなんて言うの？

「冬といえば温泉に行くのが定番です。」＝ In winter, the classic thing to do is go to a hot spring. / In winter, the standard thing to do is go to a hot spring.

そういう文脈で「定番」は「the classic thing to do」や「the standard thing to do」、「the textbook thing to do」（少しカジュアルでユーモア的な言い方！）などの言い方になります。

classic = 定番の
standard = 標準の
textbook = テキストブックの、教科書の

「定番を英語で」を検索すると色々出て来ますが、個人的にどれもお勧めしません。

「定番」とか「〜と言えばこれ」みたいな言い方はあまり英語でしません。

でも、言い方を変えると同じようなことは言えます。その中から3つ自然なフレーズを紹介します。

① Most Japanese people go to hot springs in the winter. （冬にほとんどの日本人は温泉に行きます）

② Going to a hot spring is a popular activity in the winter.（冬に温泉に行くことが人気な活動です）

③ Going to a hot spring is a staple of winter in Japan.（日本では温泉に行くことは冬の必需品です）

「staple」は色んな訳がありますが、この文で使うニュアンスは「なくてはならないもの・必要なこと」です。

「○○のが定番です」の「定番」は英語で「standard」や「is popular」を使って表現できます。

例文：
「冬といえば温泉に行くのが定番です」
→「Going to the hot spring in the winter is the standard」
→「Going to the hot spring is popular in the winter」

「夏といえばスイカを食べることが定番です」
→「Eating watermelon in the summer is the standard」
→「Eating watermelon is popular in the summer」
