In the UK, people talk about Kanji as being part of the Japanese language which uses characters which have become integrated into Japanese from the Chinese language.
"You need to understand some Kanji if you want to learn Japanese."

"Kanji" is only one of *three* Japanese alphabets.
"Kanji" characters are adapted from Chinese.
It is very difficult to understand "Kanji" characters.
How you can explain Kanji characters will depend on how much the other person already knows!
I think that a lot of Westerners come to Japan and don't know anything at all about the Japanese alphabet. You will have to start at the simplest level! Even then, a lot of Westerners will be incredibly confused! Many of them will have no experience with alphabets where a character can mean a whole word (like Chinese) or a character can mean a syllable (often two sounds together). Don't worry if the Westerner doesn't "get it" -- it doesn't mean your English is bad! It just means that the concept may be too foreign for a Westerner to understand!
Many foreign words in their original form are actually used in English, too. 'Kanji' is a perfect example of this, however we do not use it to describe the Chinese alphabet!
'Kanji' is used in reference to one of the three alphabets of the Japanese Language.
Similarly, we refer to other Japanese alphabets using their original Japanese name.
For example:
"My Japanese teacher has concluded all the lessons on the alphabets. I feel confident with Hiragana and Katakana, but my ability to read and understand Kanji is poor."
In English, we usually refer to letters of the Chinese alphabet simply as "Chinese Characters", however those who know it will use the Chinese word, "Hanzi".
英語では多くの外国語がそのままの形で使われます。「Kanji」もその一例です。ただ「Kanji」は中国のアルファベットは表しません。
「Kanji」は日本の三つあるアルファベットの一つ「漢字」を表します。
同様に、日本の他のアルファベットも日本語の名称をそのまま使って表します。
例:
"My Japanese teacher has concluded all the lessons on the alphabets. I feel confident with Hiragana and Katakana, but my ability to read and understand Kanji is poor."
〔訳〕日本語の先生のアルファベットの授業がすべて終わりました。ひらがなとカタカナについては自信があるのですが、漢字の読みと理解についてはまだまだです。
中国のアルファベットは普通「Chinese Characters」と言います。ただ中国語を知っている人は「Hanzi」を使います。
Since kanji is a word from Japanese, we should explain what it is in 'essence' and relating it to a word or descriptive phrase about it from English.
For explaining the essence of something we use the verb 'to be'
Since the word 'kanji' refers to many various Chinese characters, we use the plural form 'are'.
Kanji are characters from the Chinese language.
Instead of saying 'the Chinese language', we can shorten this and just refer to the language by the adjective 'Chinese' which should be capitalized (with a big first letter 'C')
Kanji are characters from Chinese.
Or we can describe the characters as 'Chinese' which is even shorter and more to the point.
Kanji are Chinese characters.
kanji'は日本の言葉なので、英語の単語やフレーズを使って、その本質を説明するといいです。
物事の本質を説明するときにはbe動詞を使います。'kanji'にはいろいろな文字があるので、複数形の'are'を使います。
例:
Kanji are characters from the Chinese language.
漢字は、中国語から来た文字です。
'the Chinese language'の代わりに、形容詞の'Chinese'も使えます('Chinese'の'C'は大文字)。
例:
Kanji are characters from Chinese.
漢字は、中国語から来た文字です。
または、より短く簡潔に、'Chinese'だけでも表せます。
例:
Kanji are Chinese characters.
漢字は、中国文字です。
「漢字」は中国から来ていますので、英語で「Chinese character」といいます。
ですが、そのまま「kanji」でも表現することができます。
例文:
「私は漢字を読めない」
→「I can’t read Chinese characters」
→「I can’t read kanji」
「日本の本は漢字で書かれています」
→「Japanese books are written in Chinese characters」
→「Japanese books are written in kanji」
