For any Olympic event, we refer to the teams, players, gymnast, skier etc. with the name of their nation. For example, "the ice skater representing Japan" or the "player on the Japanese team".
In the WorldCup we usually just refer to each nation's team, for example, "the Mexican team" or "the Canadian team". Or we just refer to the nation, for example "Italy is playing Japan". "The Italian player Francesco Toti is really good this year".
The Olympics seems more official and therefore we call the team, player or individual representing a nation by their name, for example "Mia Hamm, the soccer player representing the USA".

In International football tournaments each country selects 23 players to represent their country. The 'squad' is the group of players that will travel to the tournament. Not all of the players will get a chance to play in the tournament as they may be present as back up incase of injury to a more senior player. The 'team' are the 11 players that are picked to play in a match.

The word 'Japanese' functions both as an adjective and as a noun. In the first phrase 'Japanese' has functioned as an adjective and in the second phrase, it has functioned as a noun.
So, you may say:
The Japanese national team soccer player scored the most goals at this year's tournament.
or
The Japanese national team played extremely well at this year's world cup.

When a player plays in matches against other countries, you can say that the player is representing their country at a national level. For example, players in the World Cup and athletes in the Olympics are representing their countries at a national level.
