I'm here to study / do a research" と言うのが一番簡単、短くて伝わり安いと思います。 "I'm here to study Geography." ”I'm here to do a research on Marketing." ”I'm here to do a research on American cultures.

入国管理局に目的を問われたら「① I'm here on a study trip.」

Generally the words "study" and "research" are used in different ways. If you are in the United States to go to school you are here to "study". If you are in the United States to perform experiments in a laboratory or to collect data, this is "research". Studying is more learning, while research is work that provides information or new technologies.

The secret of successfully entering a country is to pass the questioning stage by the immigration officers without any hiccups! You need to tell them exactly what you know they want to hear and show them exactly what you know they want to see! Apart from your actual visa, you may well have some other document which clearly explains your academic intentions within the country you are visiting. Phrase 1 is a vague explanation, whereas Phrase 2 is a more in depth and proactive response, which may be better!
