"another"は単数の名詞と一緒に使います。「別の」という感じです。
”I go out with another friend." 「他の友達（一人）と出かけます。」
”other "は複数の名詞や数えられない名詞と一緒に使います。
"I go out with other friends." 「他の友達（複数）と出かけます。」
"I have no other family besides/ except my parents."
「両親の他には家族がいない。」
otherは他に複数ある場合、あるいはいくつかが不確定な場合に使います。
たとえばホテルが気に入らなくて、フロントにクレームする時、
Other hotels must be better.（他のホテルの方が絶対良い。）←他にたくさんある
I'll move to any other hotel.（どこか他のホテルに移るよ。）←どこでも
一方、another は an other と考えるとわかりやすいですが、対象は１つになります。
I finally moved to another hotel.（結局他のホテルに移った。）←移った先はあくまで１つ
という区別になります。
Other than that... - 他には
another は「もう1つの」という意味の英語表現です。
例：
I need another pencil.
もう1本、鉛筆が必要です。
Other than that, what do you need?
それ以外は、何が必要ですか？
Other than that, would you like anything else?
それ以外には、何か必要でしょうか？
