Most places or countries have one or more things that make them special or famous. This is how people identify with certain things, like landmarks.
eg: Azerbaijan, is between Eastern Europe and Western Asia, famous for their oil
Paris, France, "The Eiffel Tower"
Egypt, "The Pyramids"
Japan, Samurais and Samurai swords, sushi, temples
Italy, The Colosseum, art and food (pizza/pasta)

World heritage sites do make places famous.
It can be a scenic mountain like Table Mountain in South Africa located in the Western Cape or Mount Fuji in Japan or some other natural or structure constructed by human beings.
So if someone told you that he was in Cape Town and you didn't know what the city was known for, you might ask:
Are there any World Heritage Sites there? He/she might mention Table Mountain.
Natural disasters do also make some places famous.
You may then ask: Is that place famous for anything at all?
Although natural disasters are not the best things to remember, they may help you to identify a place.

南アフリカの西ケープにあるテーブル・マウンテン、日本だったら富士山など、他にも自然や人間によって作られた建物などがそれにあたります。

What is the most striking feature of your town or country?
Are there any well-known landmarks there?
When you use the expression "striking feature" you are asking for the thing that stands out the most
in that town or country.
A "feature" can refer to a thing, place, or a famous food.
When we ask about landmarks we are specifically asking for the most famous physical building or
structure in a specific town or country.
