これなんだ？（複数）って英語でなんて言うの？

読み聞かせをしている時に「これなんだ？」と聞きたいのですが、本に複数匹の犬や猫などが載っている場合、\"What is this, What is that, What is it?\"の代わりにどう言えばいいでしょうか？
また、どう答えればいいかも教えていただけると嬉しいです。

What are these? / What are those?
「これらは・あれらは」なんだ？と複数形にして聞くことができます。

または
What kind of animals are they?
「なんの動物だ？」
複数ならWhat kind of animals are they?
単数ならWhat kind of animal is this?

Do you know what kind of animals they are?
「なんの動物かわかる？」
単数ならDo you know what kind of animal this is? とも言えます。
