Estimateは見積もる、推定する等の意味があります
Will you give me a rough estimate of the cost? = 大体でいいので見積もりを下さい
ただのestimateじゃなくてrough estimate (=大体）だと聞かれた方もプレッシャーが少なくていいかもしれないです。

２番目は、"just would like to know"と伝えることで、「参考までに」といったニュアンスを伝えることができます。

とダイレクトに伝えるとよいと思います。
前もって大体の乗車賃の価格を聞いておくことは大事ですね。
