can drink a lot

I'm not a big drinker. He's a big drinker. She drinks like a fish.

I have a high tolerance (for alcohol). I have a high tolerance for alcohol and could probably drink you under the table. (Rescuing Harley より) ---- A: How do you drink a whole bottle of whiskey? こんなに小さいのにどうやって) B: I have a high tolerance, I guess. I don't know.(お酒に強いのかな。

Never once did her fortitude waver during that long illness.

  • 2. It takes a lot to make him/ her drunk.

    play icon

  • 3. He/ she can down alcohol like there's no tomorrow and still remain sober.

    play icon

1.To hold how a drink well= this means that you can drink large amounts of alcohol without getting drunk. 2. It takes a lot to make him/ her drunk. = This phrase 'it takes a lot to' means that much alcohol is required to make the person intoxicated (drunk). 3. To down alcohol like there's no tomorrow and still remain sober= this means that somebody can drink alcohol in large amounts (to down alcohol) and still remain unaffected by the alcohol (sober= not drunk). Some other related vocabulary includes: tipsy= a little drunk, but not a lot. "John is getting a little tipsy over there. He's had 5 beers already." Sober= not drunk "No alcohol for me, please! I want to stay sober tonight so I can safely drive my friends home from the bar."
1.To hold how a drink well = これは酔わずに沢山の量のアルコールを飲むことが出来る、と言う意味になります。 2. It takes a lot to make him/ her drunk. 3. To down alcohol like there's no tomorrow and still remain sober = これは沢山の量のアルコールを(to down alchohol)飲むことが出来き、そして酔わない (sober= しらふ)でいるという意味になります。 【その他の関連するボキャブラリー】 tipsy= ほろ酔い 【例】 "John is getting a little tipsy over there. He's had 5 beers already." I want to stay sober tonight so I can safely drive my friends home from the bar."

  • He/she guzzles beer bottle after beer bottle or beer can after beer can without resting.

  • He/she is a beer guzzler.

    play icon

  • He/she is a drunkard.

    play icon

If someone drinks a lot of alcohol, that person is definitely a 'beer guzzler'. There are people who enjoy their beer so much that they can't stop drinking once they have started. They will not drink normally but will quickly empty bottle after bottle or can after can continuously. Such people can appropriately be referred to as 'beer guzzlers' or drunkards. While the noun 'drunkard' can only be referred to people who drink a lot of alcohol, the noun 'guzzler' can also refer to a motor vehicle that consumes a lot of petrol. So, you may say: He/she guzzles beer bottle after beer bottle or beer can after beer can without resting. or He/she is a beer guzzler. or He/she is a drunkard.
He/she guzzles beer bottle after beer bottle or beer can after beer can without resting.(彼/彼女は休むことなくボトルや缶を次から次へと飲み干す。) He/she is a beer guzzler.(彼/彼女は大酒飲みです。) He/she is a drunkard.(彼/彼女は大酒飲みです。)

Someone who drinks a lot of alcohol is known to have a high tolerance. High tolerance means that you need to drink a large amount of alcohol to feel the effects. You can say that someone can drink a lot of alcohol or that they like to drink a lot of liquor.
