Escapism - when people drink they sometimes want to be taken to another place away from the stressful situation they may have. It is the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy - and alcohol is just another method of doing that.
"Virtual reality offers a form of escapism."
A difficult situation in life can sometimes be the reason why people drink:
"Why is James drinking so much?"
"He was divorced last week. He's still upset."
When people drink because they have an ongoing problem such as difficulties at work or economic problems, you may say that they are drinking to relieve their stress
"Virtual reality offers a form of escapism." VR
"Why is James drinking so much?"
"He was divorced last week. He's still upset."
