この場合の 間に合わなかった は I couldn't make it という
表現を使うのが良いと思います。
Make は作るなどの意味もありますがここでは辿りくと
言った感じです。
「誕生日会に間に合わなくてごめんね」
"I'm sorry I couldn't make it to your birthday party" など
I wanted to go to my friend's birthday party, but my work didn't finish so I didn't make it to the party.

"but my work didn't finish so I didn't make it to the party."＝「でも仕事が終わらず、パーティーには間に合わなかった。」
（又は、"I couldn't attend"＝「行けなかった」とも言えます。）
