  • I've lost my passport.

{解説} 米国では、 I lost my passport. I've lost my passport. ★ I've lost my passport. lost my passport(パスポートをなくした)を I have(私は現在持っている) →現在パスポートがない ★ I lost my passport. {例} I've lost my sense of taste. I've lost my keys.

A: I lost my passport. I can't get home. I'm doomed. B: Don't worry, it'll be okay.

  • I'm having a senior moment with my pasport

Well, intelligent people never lose anything! Things disappear, but they are never lost! So it is common to use a euphemism for the word 'lost' such as 'mislaid.' Of course, intelligent people also never take responsibility for losing things - it is always another person's fault. So you could say: "Someone's stolen my passport," or "Someone's taken my passport," or "Someone's moved my passport," if you can't find it. You could just hold your hands in the air and exclaim: "My passport has disappeared!" as if by some magic spell. A common saying these days is also 'to have a senior moment' which means to be forgetful. So if you are having a senior moment with your passport, it simply means it is somewhere, but you can't remember where it is! Needless to say, if you are making a police or insurance report, you will have to state that you have actually 'lost' your pasport!
"Someone's stolen my passport," 、"Someone's taken my passport," 、 "Someone's moved my passport," ということもできます。

  • I am in a bit of a panic since I have misplaced my passport and the flight is in 3 hours

Those dreaded words...No one want to say;-) My passport is Missing/Misplaced/ Mislaid /Lost . When we lose something we can also use euphemisms... I have Mislaid misplaced etc this softens the message but retains the core meaning!
"My passport is missing/misplaced/mislaid/lost(パスポートを無くしました。)"

When something gets lost, it means that the thing can not be found. You are not in possession of it and you need to look for it and find it. When you find it, it will no longer be lost because you will be in its possession. When you say 'I lost my passport', you are bearing full responsibility for its loss as opposed to 'my passport got lost'. On the other hand, when you 'misplace' something, you will have lost it temporarily. You probably put it in a place that you temporarily can not remember. So, you may say: My passport got lost. or I misplaced my passport. or I lost my passport.
I lost my passport'と言う時には、 'my passport got lost'とは対照的に、あなたは損失の全責任を負っています。 My passport got lost. or I misplaced my passport. or I lost my passport.

*I lost my passport.- If you can't find something it means that you have lost it. You may need to trace back your steps maybe you dropped it somewhere and you can always ask other people if they have . *I have misplaced my passport.- Misplaced means that you have temporarily lost something. You have the hope of finding it again.
I lost my passport. I have misplaced my passport.

To "misplace" means to put something in the wrong place temporarily. Usually, when we say this, we have forgotten where we have put whatever it is we are looking for. It happens to everyone. Sometimes more often to some, and to others, less often. "I can't seem to find" is a way of saying that you normally should be able to find something, but at this moment you cannot. It leaves the possibility that you may find what you are looking for in the end.
"I can't seem to find" は「いつもあるものが見つからない」という意味です。

If your passport can not be found then it is lost. Often times, people think things are lost but they have placed it somewhere and it is misplaced. You can choose the proper setting and use one of the three examples.

  • My passport is nowhere to be found.

  • I've looked high and low for my passport but I can't find it.

    play icon

1.My passport is nowhere to be found. If something is "nowhere to be found" then it means that you have looked everywhere for your passport but you were still unable to locate it. 2.I've looked high and low for my passport but I can't find it. To look "high and low" for something means that you have searched every conceivable place in your home/flat/hotel, but you were still unable to find your passport. Another example: I looked high and low for my car keys, but it's nowhere in my flat.
1. My passport is nowhere to be found.(パスポートがどこにもない) "nowhere to be found" は「そこら中探したけどどこにもない」という意味です。 2. I've looked high and low for my passport but I can't find it.(よく探したけど見つからない) "To look high and low for something" は、「(家/アパート/ホテルの部屋を)くまなく探したけど見つからない」という意味です。 I looked high and low for my car keys, but it's nowhere in my flat.(アパートをよく探したけど車の鍵はどこにもない)
