「What I thought was important」は「大切だと思ったこと」ですね。「by coming here」というのは「ここに来て」です。「coming here」が文の最初でも使えられます。
「positive attitude」は積極性ですね。
taichiさんが言いたいのはアメリカでみんなは「自分から話しかける」とのことですね。そうだったら、2つ目の文章で使った「assertiveness」とも言えますね。「assertiveness」というのは例えば普段は自信のある人またはフレンドリーな人がもっと顔をあげて自分から話しかけますね。そういう人にassertiveと言います。
2つ目では、「When I came here」を使いましたが、これは「ここに来たら、ここに来たときなど」という意味です。文章で「ここに来て分かったのは…」という意味します。
