Good evening is quite a formal expression.
When greeting friends or close acquaintances it is normal to say
Hey
Hi
Hiya
Even though it is evening, it is not necessary to say 'good evening' unless it is a very formal setting.

Good afternoon = a greeting for the afternoon
Good evening = a greeting for the evening
Good day = a greeting anytime of day
Good night = a parting message when you are leaving someone late evening or at night.
These messages are a little more formal than 'Hi' which may seem too informal if you don't know someone very well. 'Hello' may be used anytime.
