I didn't give much thought to it = あまり考えなかった
I just decided to = ただ決めた
この二つの文を合わしますと「深く考えず何となく決める」の相当する言葉です。
「何でタバコを吸い始めたの？」というのは Why did you start smoking? で聞くことができます。
それに対して I didn't give much though to it, I just decided to start smoking が「深く考えず何となく決める」の言い方となります。
「何でその服にしたの？」は Why did you choose those clothes? で言うことができます。
答えは I didn't give much thought to it, I just decided to wear them になります。
