この場合の「かわす」は fend off を使うと良いでしょう。fend off verbal attacks で「言葉の攻撃をかわす」

「くだらない侮辱的なことを言われたら、自分を守るために言いたいことをわかっている」
このように言った方が、もうちょっと自然な感じになります。
defend で「守る・弁護する」
insulting で「侮辱的な」
