です。
①は、

「政府の新しい政策は物議をかもしている＝多くの人が反対し、

ex. The manager's decision was very controversial.
「その監督の決定は、賛否両論であった」
などと使えます。
また ②は、
ex. His performance tonight was far from ideal.
彼の今晩のパフォーマンス（スポーツなど）は、
理想からは程遠かった
ex. My skills are far from perfect.
私のスキルは完璧からは程遠い
・・・などと使用できます。
その他、「勝ちにこだわる」は、シンプルに
the most important（最重要）と言い換えました。
なお、「日本人の美意識」は、そのまま訳しますと
不自然になりそうでしたので、「日本人が期待する
横綱の理想の姿」と言い換えてみました。
また、文中の often too aggressive の箇所は、
「しばしば、攻撃的過ぎる（手を使った）」という意味です。
