台風怖いですね！海外の友人に伝えるのであれば、a typhoon（ある台風が）、このたびの台風襲来のことを知っている日本人の友達に伝えるときは、the typhoon（例の台風が）という言い方をしてください。

英訳1：in the middle of ~ で「〜の真ん中に」というイディオムがあります。これに、「まさに」「ちょうど」と強調する副詞 right とつけると「真っ只中にある」という表現になります。
英訳2：in the center of ~ も「〜の真ん中に」という表現になるので、very を入れて強調します。

Typhoons can be very destructive and no nice words can be used to describe their activity. Since Tokyo is in the 'path' of the typhoon, it means that it is 'sweeping' right through the city. The verb to 'sweep' has several meanings, but, in this context, it means that the typhoon is 'moving or pushing whatever is in its path with great force'.
In the second line the verb 'smashing', present participle of the verb to 'smash' has been used. It means to violently break something into pieces. In this case, the typhoon is breaking everything in its way to pieces.
So, you may say:
Tokyo is in the path of the typhoon and it is sweeping through presently.
or
The typhoon is smashing through Tokyo right now.
