The most direct way to get this is just to ask for the next size down. If you try something on and it's too big you need something smaller. And if it's too small you need something bigger. Also, you may state that it's too big for you. You need something smaller!

If you are shopping and you want an item that is one size smaller, you can ask the following:-

The first one is a more polite way of asking, although, the second one is the correct version too. Instead of (thing) you need to put a word which describes clothes you want to get.
