音が大きい、小さいって英語でなんて言うの?

スカイプレッスンの時、先生のマイクの音が大きすぎたり、小さすぎたり、大きすぎて音が割れていたりした時の表現で、「マイクの音が大きすぎます」「小さいので聞こえにくいです」など、どう伝えたらよいですか?

Hey there ecco!

ユーコネクトのアーサーです。

「音が大きい」「音が小さい」という時、一般的に「loud」か「soft」を使ってもいいです。
日本語と同じように「the sound」などは入りません。

テレビは音が大きい
The TV is loud.

意味をさらに明確にする場合、the sound (音が) またはthe volume(ボリュームが)も言えます。

※ 〜すぎる ※
何かが「〜すぎる」と思うとき、素直に言えば「too〜」と言います。

音が大きすぎるというと、
Too loud
音が小さすぎるというと、
Too soft

It's too soft, can you turn up the volume?
音が小さいんですが、少し大きくしてもらえますか?

よろしくお願いします!

  • I'm sorry teacher but I cannot hear your voice, it is too soft.

  • I'm sorry teacher but your voice is too loud. Can you please turn down your volume?

Both of these sentences will help your teacher understand that their voice is too low or too high. The word soft is often used to describe when something is too low. For example if you go to a cafe they may have soft music in the background. That means that you can barely hear the music. This is a word that is common in our everyday conversation and would be good to add to your vocabulary.
どちらの表現も先生に声が大きすぎたり、小さすぎたりすることを理解してもらえます。
この"soft"とは何かが小さい時によく使われる表現です。
例えば、カフェに行った時にバックグラウンドに"soft music"(静かな音楽)が流れていたり。
これは日常的によく会話で使われる言葉なので、あなたのボキャブラリーに追加するといいですね。

  • Sorry teacher, your audio volume is too low and I can't hear you clearly.

  • Sorry teacher, I can't hear you clearly because your voice is too low.

    play icon

  • Excuse me teacher, your audio volume is too loud.

    play icon

The reason why you have to be apologetic by starting with 'sorry teacher' is because you will have interrupted him/her while he/she was probably in the middle of explaining something to you. Then , of course, you continue with the reason why you have interrupted him/her. The noun 'audio' refers to sound, and, in this context, when it is transmitted. The phrase 'excuse me' is a polite apology in this context, used especially when you believe you are interrupting someone.
So, you may say:
Sorry teacher, your audio volume is too low and I can't hear you clearly.
or
Sorry teacher, I can't hear you clearly because your voice is too low.
or
Excuse me teacher, your audio volume is too loud.
 'sorry teacher'と謝る表現を使うのは、先生が何かを説明しているのを中断するからです。そして、どうして中断するのかを説明します。名詞 'audio' は、音を意味します。 'excuse me'は、丁寧な表現で、特に、誰かを遮ってしまうときに使われます。

Sorry teacher, your audio volume is too low and I can't hear you clearly.
先生、すみません。あなたの音量が小さすぎて、はっきり聞こえません。

If during an online class and you experience an issue where you cannot hear your tutor correctly you can use this phrase "Your microphone volume is too quiet / soft, Can you speak a little bit louder please?", when something is "soft" in this context is insinuating something is subtle and gentle.
If the volume is too loud you can use "Your microphone volume is too loud / harsh, can you speak softer please".

  • Can you please turn up/down your sound.

  • I think your microphone is too low. I can not hear you.

    play icon

  • Your volume is too high. Do you mind turning it down?

    play icon

The easiest way to ask this question is just request them to turn down or turn up the sound. You can always ask if they would mind turning it down when it is too high/low. Last but not least is to ask them to turn up their volume so you can hear them.
