It was sad for her to hear the news.
『そのニュースを耳にすることは彼女にとって悲しいことでした。』
※彼女にとって悲しいことなので、for 『～にとって』を使います。
She was sad to hear the news.
『そのニュースを耳して彼女は悲しんでいた。』
というような意味の文章では残念ながら of は使わないです。
少し変わりますが、
receive the sad news of someone's death 『人の訃報を受ける』というような場合、the sad news of とすることはできますね！
