この場合、次のような言い方ができます。

ーI didn't really study the way most people think of studying.
「私は大抵の人が考える勉強の仕方で勉強しなかった」

ーI never hit the books in the traditional sense.
「私は従来の意味での勉強をしたことがない」
to hit the books「勉強する」
in the traditional sense「従来の意味での」
