カジュアルな感じで聞くなら「What are your gym goals?」と尋ねるのが一番自然かと思います。
「Why are you training?」とか聞くと、「何だお前、関係ねーだろ」って思われるかもしれません。少なくとも、僕がトレーニングをしている時は邪魔されたくないし、増しては見知らぬ人物に聞かれる筋合いはないので。。。
もし、ちゃんとアプローチして聞くなら「Hey man, I saw you working out and I was just wondering what your gym goals were? Sorry if I'm intruding」がマシかと思います。
