Can I take your plate?

Are you done?

Mom: Can I take your plate?
Child: No!
Mom: Why? Aren't you done?
Child: I'm done.
Mom: So can I take your plate? I need to do the dishes.

  • May I take your plate if you have finished eating?

In the first question, you are asking if the child is done with the plate so you can take it to the kitchen sink.
The word 'done' is the past participle of 'do'. In this usage, you are basically asking if the child has completed eating so you can take the plate away.
However, it may sound rather vague to the child.

In the second question, you are being more .specific by adding 'if you have finished eating'.
This is clearer to the child than in the first question which could sound 'vague' to the child.
By the adjective 'vague', I mean 'not clearly expressed'.
When communicating with children, it is important to be precise.

  • Can I put your plate away?

  • Are you done eating?

The above sentences imply that you want to know if they done so that you can take their plate. To put away means to take the plate and put it in the rightful place.
To put away ."

When you want to ask your child this question, don't worry because it's easy to do. Just you any of these two sentences and they will know what you want from them.
