Because, when a foreigner asks me for directions, I want to answer it in English.
「道を聞く」は ask for directions で表現できます。
例文は「外国人が道を私に聞いてきた時に、英語で答えたいから」という文にしてみました。
交番を教えたいという場合は、次のような文が使えます。
If I don't know the answer, I want to tell him/her the way to a police box.
（答えがわからなければ、交番への行き方を教えたい）

If I don't know where the place is, I want to tell them where the nearest police station is.
英訳例①「外国人（観光客などの訪問者）から道を聞かれたら、英語で道を教えられるようになりたいです。」
◎I want to be able➡"to be able"→○○を／ができる、○○を／ができるようになりたい
◎to give directions in English➡英語で道順を教える、 "give directions"→道順を教える
◎when foreign visitors ask me➡外国人訪問者（観光客など）に（道を）聞かれたら
英訳例②「もし（聞かれた）場所が判らなかったら、最寄りの交番がどこにあるかを教えたいです。」
◎If I don't know where the place is➡もし（聞かれたら）場所がわからなかったら
◎I want to tell them➡彼ら（外国人）に教えたい
◎where the nearest police station is➡最寄りの交番がどこにあるか
その後に続く理由として「お巡りさんに道を聞けます」というような事を説明する際は
➡"They can ask a police officer for directions."
お巡りさん→(a) police officer
