The word for
Grandmother can also be:
Grandma, granny, gran

For grandfather, you can say:
Grandpa, Grandad,

In order to speak about both grandmother and grandfather, you can say:
Grandparents.

You can say:
I've always been close to my grandparents.
Since childhood, I've been close to my grandparents.

I hope that helps!
grandma, granny, gran

grandpa, grandad

grandparents

I've always been close to my grandparents.
または
Since childhood, I've been close to my grandparents.

Yes, as in your question, you can use the word 'close' to describe relationships. You may also say something like:
"I've always been very attached to my grandparents."
Of course, 'attached' means that you are 'close.' 'Close' means that there is a mutual relationship between you and your grandparents, whereas, attached could mean that YOU feel connected to your grandparents, but perhaps they do not. 'Close' gives the idea of a good mentral connection, whereas 'attached' may just mean a connection of necessity. For example, you go to see your grandparents every evening to have a meal.
Similarly, 'special relationship' could have many different meanings. Context and intonation will usually clearly define more about what is meant by 'special relationship.'
"I've always been very attached to my grandparents."

Having a "close relationship" and "being close" are two ways of saying the same thing.

"I have always had a close relationship with my grandmother/grandfather."
You are explaining a fact that has remained consistent until the present moment.

"My close relationship with my grandmother/grandfather goes as far back as childhood."
goes as far back = has been a reality since a long time in the past
You could always say:
-I have always maintained a close relationship with my grandparents
To maintain a relationship is to make sure that it does not change;your closeness with your grandparents is something you have actively taken care of.
"I have always had a close relationship with my grandmother/grandfather."

Close relationship=

"My close relationship with my grandmother/grandfather goes as far back as childhood."

Goes as far back as=~以来の、~まで遡る。

I have always maintained a close relationship with my grandparents「祖父母とはずっと親しい関係を維持しています。」

"Ever since I was a child, I have been close with my grandfather/grandmother." is something you can when you want to explain to others that you and a grandfather or grandmother have been close with each other since childhood.
Ever since I was a child, I have been close with my grandfather/grandmother.

Any fact that was true in the past and is still true today needs to use present perfect tense: have/has been. We say "close to" when we have a really good relationship with someone, especially family. "are you close to your sister?" "I have a close relationship with my parents."
“Are you close to your sister?”
"I have a close relationship with my parents."
