Anyone who speaks English will know that when you say "cardinal directions" that you are talking about the points on the compass, which are North, South, East, and West. You could also say the points of the compass but you would be best understood saying cardinal directions.
コンパスで東西南北の方向のことを、"cardinal directions" というと、英語を話す人は誰でもわかります。
the points of the compassと言うこともできますが、 cardinal directionsと言うのがベストでしょう。

Most people would say "In which direction should I go?" and then you would answer with either "South, East, West or North."You won't hear the words "Cardinal points" very much on the streets. "Compass points" are common and used by people when referring to a compass but in general when you're having a normal conversation with someone who isn't a scientist saying "direction" is acceptable and understood by many.

North,East,South an West are called directions collectively. There are used to for directions. Before there was technology people used the sun to know here the West is and the East is. The sun rises in East and sets in the West. A compass is also used to show these directions as it will indicate where the North, East, West and South is.
