Feast of Lupercalia
Historians trace the origin of Valentine's Day to ancient Roman Empire. It is said that in the Rome of ancient times people observed a holiday on February 14th to honor Juno - the Queen of Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also regarded Juno as the Goddess of Women and Marriage. On the following day, February 15th began the fertility festival called 'Feast of Lupercalia'. The festival of Lupercalia was celebrated to honor the Gods Lupercus and Faunus - the Roman God of Agriculture besides the legendary founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus.
If you want to wish someone an enjoyable day on Valentine's day, you would say "Happy Valentine's Day". In England when you write a Valentine's card you would ask someone to "Be my Valentine", which is a romantic gesture. In England Valentine's cards are supposed to be offered anonymously so that the receiver of the card must guess who has sent them the card and so instead of putting your name you write a question mark such as "from ?"
Well, there are always winners and losers in love and as a general greeting to a group, although your well-wishes will be understood, the greeting may not be appropriate for those who are not dating or who have just split up from someone, or who are going through some kind of romantic crisis such as divorce. In the UK it is not a general greeting on this day like Christmas. However, on a more personal level, the first two example sentences may suit your situation.
"Happy Valentine's day!" "Happy Valentines!"
Both very common phrases used on Valentines day, they can often be used as a greeting too.
'Valentine's' is the term used on Valentines day to describe someone you love/attracted too.
