Upon birth, people are categorized into either the male or female category. Female is a term usually used in the clinical sense to denote a person that would fall into the girl/woman categories depending on how old they are.
A girl is a young female person - usually from 0 - 18 years old.
A woman is an older female person - usually from 19 and older.
