オンライン英会話の最中に、「日本人は鯨を食べるんでしょ？」って聞かれました。私は日本人だけど、食べたことないなぁ…。
昔の日本のイメージが今も残ってるケースって、この話に限らずよくありますよね。

used to 動詞の原形で、以前は～していた、
という表現です。
not any moreはもう～していない、という表現です。
not nowを代わりに使って、今は違う、と
言うこともできます。
また、used to do thatで、それ(鯨を食べること)は以前やっていた、と簡素にまとめることもできます。

The phrase 'in the past' can be used to express something that was done before and no longer done in the same way or no longer done at all. To say that the Japanese used to eat whales in the past, would mean that this is no longer something commonly done.
