ソフトウェアなどのプログラム関係では bug が多く使われます。
a bug in the software（ソフトの不具合/バグ）
機械などでは defect が一般的です。
a defect in the braking system（ブレーキの不具合）
ただ、これはプログラムなどでも使います。
failure も使えますが、こちらは「欠陥」に近くなり、かなり深刻な場合に使うといいでしょう。
「不具合」は英語で「not working properly」や「malfunction」、「problem」、「trouble」といいます。システムやソフトの「不具合」は「bug」といいます。

「不具合」は英語で色々な訳があります。IT関係とかソフトウェアのキーワードについて、bugという表現がよく使われます。機械の問題の時にはmalfunctionがよく使われます。たとえば：

Due to a computer malfunction, we couldn’t work. （パソコンの不具合で、動かなかった。）
