PEAK is the top or highest point...and in this case describes the absolute hottest it got during the day...We might also use maximum temperature (like the weatherman/woman)

We can call the highest temperature of the day simply as "a high". "Maximum" can be used to talk about the highest temperature during the day as it means the largest or highest or even the limit of something.

The phrase "today's sun is a scorcher" basically means that it is very hot. Alternatively, you can use the word "extremely"to describe the extent to which the weather is hot on the day. E.g. Today is extremely hot.
