ICカードのICはintegrated-circuit (データ等を記録する集積回路)の略です。
海外でもICカードを取り入れているところは増えているようですね。
でも日本ほどコンビニや自動販売機などで使えるほど普及しているところは
珍しいのでは??

An IC card is a preloaded card that gives you access to the rail network within Japan. Some of these cards are limited to particular areas or types of transport, however this list of transport options for each card is constantly growing.
The use of a 'Prepaid Travel Card' makes it more convenient for those that regularly use public transport. It also lowers the cost by using one of these 'travel cards'.
These cards have different names around the world. From the Oyster Card in the UK to the Opal Card in Sydney, Australia.
If you don't have a 'Bus Pass' or 'Rail Pass' you have to purchase a single ticket on the transport option that you have chosen. Single tickets are simply called a 'bus ticket', 'rail ticket' or 'ferry ticket' for example.
In English a 'Prepaid Travel Card' and 'Travel Card' can be used interchangeably when discussing or asking for one of these options. It is helpful to use the name or brand when asking to purchase one of these cards from an outlet.
"IC cards" like "Suica" "ICOCA" and "PASMO" in English are called, or at least I would mostly call them, travel cards.
For example.
I need to take the metro today.
Do you have your travel card with you?
Yeah.
Is it topped up?
Yeah, for another month.
Okay, see you later then.
I hope this helps.
Have a great day.
Will
Technically speaking, IC cards are referred to as Intelligent Cards or Smart Cards. They are smart in the sense that one card can have many different functions. Smart may also refer to the electronic memory capability.
In New York City, one can use a Metro Card to travel on public buses and trains. In NY slang any kind of transportation IC card might be called a Metro Card even if it is not an actual Metro Card.
