1. "Could you kindly speak slower and use smaller words?" This is a slightly formal way to ask the person who you are speaking with to speak slower and use more understandable words. Itis also very direct and to the point, so the person will immediately know to slow their English speed down and simplify the way they are speaking to you. Example: You: "Could you kindly speak slower and use smaller words?" Person: "Oh, I'm sorry. Yes of course!" 2. "Could I ask you to speak in a simpler way?" This is a great, informal sentence for everyday use while speaking with friends, coworkers, and others. Here, this is informal because we don't say "kindly" or begin the sentence with "I'm sorry" or a similar phrase. If you use this sentence, make sure to have a cheery or light tone of voice. If you use this phrase with a frustrated tone of voice, others may think you are being impolite or showing that you are irritated. Example: Friend: "I have to say, her fashion voice was undoubtedly poor for the type party we were attending." You: "Could I ask you to speak in a simpler way? [I didn't understand what you just said.]" 3. "I'm sorry, but could you say that again? I didn't quite catch that." Whenever you are having trouble understanding your teacher, it is always a good idea to tell him or her that you do not understand. If your teacher speaks using words that are too hard for you to understand just politely say "I don't understand what you are telling me, could you please use simpler words for me?" Likewise, if you want your teacher to explain the unknown words to you, say the following: "Please would you explain the words you said before?"

Sometimes teachers when trying to explain a difficult phrase make it even more complicated! Rephrase' is a verb which means 'to say something in a different way'. If you ask someone to rephrase something for you, they will most likely simplify that sentence. 'Vocabulary' is a synonym for 'words', however, it has a more specific meaning: 'the body of words known to an individual person'. For example, you can say 'He has a wide vocabulary' if a person knows and uses a lot of different words. Lastly, if you wish to explain why you want the person to use simpler words, you can say that you have difficulties understanding the words he/she used.

When asking the teacher to repeat what he/she has just said using easier words to understand, it is important to ask as politely as possible. This can be done by using the adverb 'please' which is an expression of politeness when asking for something. Without using this adverb, the request sounds like a command and the teacher would feel uncomfortable. If the words the teacher has used are big ones, they must have sounded unfamiliar to you and you definitely could not have understood what he/she would have said. So, you may say: Please use simple words since I have difficulty in understanding the big ones. or Will you please simplify what you have just said. I didn't quite understand it?

If you explain you do not understand what the person is saying it will prompt them to change. If you have an already determined relationship with your teacher and they understand your level of learning personally you could give them specific direction.
