→”keep a distance from”で「〜から距離をおく」となります。

彼／彼女とはあまり親しくなりたくない。
→” avoid -ing”はすこしネガティブなニュアンスを含んで「〜するのを避ける」という意味似なります。
"too friendly"は"too close"とも言い換えができますが、先にあげた例よりは付き合いはしていてより親しくなるというニュアンスですね。
