「支出」は殆どの文脈で "expense" ではなく "expenses" （又は "expenditure")
を使います（色々違う物にお金出している場合)。本当に一つだけの事にお金を使った場合には"expense"を使う事はできます。例えば、"With the increase in gobal oil prices, fuel became a considerable expense for our company last year." => 「世界的な原油価格の上昇に伴い、昨年当社の燃料費は相当に増加しました。」

「支出は予想以上の速さで（予想した以上早いレートで）増加している。」(rate = レート)
"Expenses have been rising faster than expected." ＝＞
「支出は予想より（速く）上昇しています。」
