英語では悪意のないウソのことを「白いウソ」と言います。正に相手を気遣う時など、本当に軽いウソのことですね。
逆に悪意があり、相手を尊敬せずに気分を悪くするために言うウソを a black lie と言うかというと、これはあまり使われることはありません。
その場合、ウソはウソなので a lie が一般的です。しかし仮にblack lie と言っても、恐らく聞き手側はそれがどういう意味かを理解すると思います。
White lie＝悪気のない嘘
悪気のない嘘、誰も傷つかないような嘘、と言う意味です。
似たような言葉で以下があります：
Slight stretch＝少し事実をごまかす
Near Truth＝ほぼ事実
It was a slight stretch when I told you I fully recovered from my cold＝熱から完全に復活したって言うのは少し大げさだったかも
It's a near truth when I say I work for the government＝政府に関わる仕事をしているって言うのはほぼ事実です

真実を伝えて傷つけるより小さな嘘を言ったほうが良い時があります。

In the old days if you were economical it meant you were very good at saving, budgeting and using things sparingly.
To be economical with the truth means you use the truth in a very sparing way, you just reveal only a little bit of the truth not all of the information.
In reality this means you dont tell people the whole truth, you only tell them a small part of it.

To be economical with the truth とは真実をとても控えめに使い、すべてを言わずほんの少しだけの真実を明かすことをいいます。
現実ではこれは真実をすべては言わず少しだけ伝えることを言います。

A white lie is a type of lie that isn't supposed to have bad intentions but rather is meant to protect the feelings of the person we are telling it to.
