「舞台」は日本語だといろんなタイプのパフォーマンスを意味する無難な単語です。英語だとそれぞれ異なった単語を使わないといけないので、劇だとすれば play 、ミュージカルなら musical、コンサートなら concert、その他のパフォーマンスは performance、ショーは show など、異なります。「見にいきました」は I went to see で大丈夫です。
「友達が出演している劇」は a play that my friend is in と言います。
I went to see a play that my friend is in = 友達が出演している劇を見に行きました。
I went to the theater to see my friend's performance というと「友達のパフォーマンス（演技など）を見に行くために劇場に行きました」となります。
