Oh, I didn't know that! It's completely new to me! Good to know. Thank you. Good luck!

In order to say you didn't know something you can say: That's a first! That's new to me! Followed by a a thank you or a mention of appreciation.
That's a first! That's new to me!

  • Thank you for sharing that with me.

"Thank you for sharing that with me" would possibly be the best sentence to use since you are being subtle about the fact that you have just learned a new word or phrase for the first time but also thanking the teacher for it.
"Thank you for sharing that with me" が一番いいかもしれません。

On, I never knew (that)!

It can also be used in general whenever someone gives you useful information. A. The train station is only 2 blocks away. B. Good to know. You learn something new everyday. - This is commonly used as most people learn something new everyday. Especially when learning a new language. :) Oh! I didn't know that! - is the one I would use the most. It's natural and tells the other person that it is new information. You did not know it before now.
You learn something new everyday.'(日々勉強です)- よく使われる表現です。 :) 'Oh! I didn't know that!'(それ知らなかった)- 個人的に一番よく使います。

Really? Wow, I never knew that.
