雨の日には、一度に二匹の犬と歩くのは難しいので、XXを家に置いてきました。
という意味になります。

at the same time…一度に
犬の名前を言うほど知り合いでもなければ、xxをanother one（別の犬）という代名詞に置き換えても良いでしょう。
